An investigation entitled "Open water culture system for flood resilience in Kuttanad ecosystem" was conducted in farmer's field at north Kuttanad during 2023 June- September as two trials to evaluate the efficacy of open water culture with respect to yield and economics of amaranthus cultivation against hydroponics with and without water hyacinth as medium; with 6 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were T1: Open water culture without medium, T2: Open water culture with medium, T3: Hydroponics without medium, T4: Hydroponics with medium, T5: Land cultivation with a bed of water hyacinth alone as medium and T6: Control: soil culture-KAU-POP recommended dose of nutrients. Amaranthus variety Arun was used for the study. The treatments had significant effect on growth characters, yield, media nutrient content, plant nutrient content and uptake. Among the treatments, T6 and T5 recorded significantly taller plants, a greater number of leaves, higher leaf area index, root length, root volume and more number of branches plant-1 in both the trials. The yield was significantly higher in T6, which was on par with T5 followed by T2. Significantly higher macro and micronutrient content of the media was found in T5 at 15, 30 and 45 DAT. The plant nutrient content and uptake were significantly influenced by the growth medium. The highest nutrient content and uptake in case of macro nutrients was higher in T6 and T5 have more micro nutrient content followed by T6. The economic analysis revealed that T5 (Land cultivation with a bed of water hyacinth alone as medium) and T6 (Control: soil culture- KAU-POP recommended dose of nutrients) recorded higher net income and benefit-cost ratio. The water hyacinth was found to be rich in nutrients and as effective as soil cultivation with POP recommended dose of nutrients with regard to yield and growth attributes with less cost of cultivation, another advantage.
