    Co 88017, a promising sugarcane variety

    The results of the study on sixteen zonal varieties received from the All India Co-ordinated Project (AICRP) on Sugarcane along with Madhuri (CoTl 88322), the ruling variety in Kerala as check revealed that Co 88017 out yielded the check in tenns of cane yield as well as commercial cane sugar. It has recorded a cane yield of 102.5 t ha.' and sugar yield of 13.18 t ha'. This variety was superior to many other entries tested in quality aspects of juice. Co 88017 was moderately resistant to red rot disease.

    Ecophysiology of azolla and its management for rice production

    In order to explore the agronomic potential of azolla for rice production, an investigation entitled 'Ecophysiology of azolla and its management for rice production ' was carried out at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pattambi, during the years 1980 to 1984 with the following objectives: (1) To study the influence of environmental conditions on the growth and establishment of azolla. (2) To assess the nutritional requirement of azolla. (3) To find out the time of application and optimum quantity of azolla inoculum required for growing it as an intercrop with rice. (4) To identify the geometry of planting rice favouring the multiplication of azolla in the field.

    Studies on the effect of methods of nitrogen application on mineral uptake of high yielding sweet potato varieties

    A field experiment was conducted in the red loam soils of the farm attached to the College of Agriculture, Vellayani during November 1972 to March 1973 to study the effect of methods of nitrogen application on nitrogen uptake of three sweet potato varieties i, e. H 41, H42 and Kottaranchola. The results showed that nitrogen uptake was markedly affected by methods of application. Uptake was more when nitrogen was applied in two split doses., i. e. half at planting and the remaining half as foliar spray 35 days after planting. Full basal application resulted in the lowest uptake of nitrogen. It was also observed that there was a translocation of considerable portion of nitrogen from vines to developing tubers.
