Seeds of four varieties of bhindi vis. local white pusa red pusa sowani and kilichundan obtained from the agricultural college farm were used and sown in the botanic garden of the college on 13.10.1964. A large number of flowers in each variety were selfed to have the parental seeds for the next season. Crossing between varieties in all possible combinations was also undertaken to get F1 seeds for the investigation .Item Investigations on the effects of X-rays on Cowpea (Vigna sinensis L. SAVI.)(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1964) Ravindran Nayar, P N; Kumara Pillai, PThis thesis embodies the results of an investigation carried out to study the effect of X-rays on the common cowpea (vigna senensis). A pure variety of cowpea (African) was selected , dry and pre soaked seeds of which were treated with X-raysat the following doses: 1000, 3000, 5000, 7000, 9000, 11,000, 13,000 and 15,000 r. units. Germination, survival of plants, chlorophyll and other morphological abnormalities, growth of plants, pollen sterility, flower production, fruit set, average seeds per pod and 1000 seed weight were studied. The frequency of abnormal anaphases were studied from root tip squashes. Regression analysis was carried out for almost all obsevations to establish the relationship between doses and the different characters observed.Item Investigations on the manifestation of hybrid vigour in brinjal (Solanum melongena Linn.)(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1967) Viswanathan, T V; Kumara Pillai, PThe present investigation was carried out in the Agricultural Botany division of the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani during the year 1966-1967. A detailed study on the first generation hybrids of eight crosses involving 5 parental varieties of brinjal viz. Muktakeshi, White long, Pusa purple long, Purple long Dutta, Banaras giant were made on 11 characters.Item Nutritional effects of nitrogen on certain anatomical characters of rice plant related to lodging(Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikara, 1968) Chandramony, D; Mary K, George; Kumara Pillai, PItem Resistance of a wild brinjal variety to bacterial wilt-Research Note(Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikara, 1969) Srinivasan, K; Gopimony, R; Swaminathan, M; Kumara Pillai, PItem Studies on inter-varietal hybrids of rice (Oryza sative Linn.) with special reference to hybrid sterility and heterosis(Division of agricultural botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute Vellayani, Trivandrum, 1967) Narayanan Unnithan, K; Kumara Pillai, PItem Studies on pollen morphology, production and viability in different varieties of 'shoe flower-(Hibiscus rosa-sinesis L.)(Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikara, 1966) Vilasini, G; George; Kumara Pillai, PItem Studies on the biological effects of x-rays on chillies (Capsicum annuum L.)(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1969) Kamaluddin Sahib, M; Kumara Pillai, PThis thesis work was oriented towards the study of the M1 parameters, and the chlorophyll mutation spectrum in the M2 generation of the X-ray irradiated seeds of K-1 variety of Chillies (Capsicum annuum L.) Germination tests showed higher percentage of germination in the control than in the treatments.Item Studies on the effect of F. W-450 and MH as male gametocides in chillies (Capsicum frutescens L.)(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani, 1967) Sadasivan Pillai, S; Kumara Pillai, PThe present investigation was undertaken in the Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani during 1966-1967, with a view to evaluate the selectiveness of F.W 450 and MH on chillies as male gamotocides and to study their side effects on the general growth and yield of the crop. F.W -450 at 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 and 0.30 and MH at 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm were applied as foliar spray at three stages of plant growth. The first spraying was given when the first flower was undergoing anthesis. Subsequent sprayings were given at an interval of 15 days in between two sprayings. Control plants (no spray) and plants sprayed with distilled water thrice, at the same stages of plant growth as the chemical spray, were also studied. Plants were raised in a randomised block design.Item Studies on the effect of gibberellic acid on the growth and yield in rice (Oryza sativa, L)(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1964) Sathya Das, E; Kumara Pillai, PThe present investigation is undertaken to study the effects of gibberellic acid on the cereal, rice (Oryza sativa. L). The hormone was used at concentrations of 25,50,75, 100 and 125 ppm., as spray application on the 21 days old seedlings. Three stages of applications namely spraying once in a week , once in two weeks and once in three weeks were tried. A pot culture experiment was conducted adopting a randomised block design. The effect of gibberellic acid on the height of plants, number of tillers, time of flowering, fresh and dry weight of stem, length of the ear heads, number of leaves , dry weight of the roots and the yield were studied. Of these only height of the plants was influenced significantly by the treatments. Marked shoot elongation was observed in the gibberellic acid treated plants. The maximum response was at the level of 100 ppm. Weekly spraying is better than spraying once in two weeks and once in three weeks.Item Studies on the effect of growth regulators on flowering and fruit-setting in Sesamum indicum(Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikara, 1964) Santha Kumari, S; Kumara Pillai, PItem Studies on the effect of growth regulators on fruit setting in cardamom(Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikara, 1964) Santha Kumari, S; Kumara Pillai, PItem Studies on the effect of growth regulators on germination, growth and oil content in Sesame (Sesamum indicum-L)(Division of Agricultural Botany, Agricultural College & Research Institute, Vellayani, 1963) Santha Kumari, S; Kumara Pillai, PAn experiment was conducted at the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Vellayani during 1962-63, to study the effect of three growth regulators NAA, GA and 2, 4-D on germination, growth and oil content of Sesamum indicum.
