The combining ability analysis by the Method I of Griffing's (1959) approach revealed that the parent NBPGR/TCR 861 was the best general combiner for single fruit weight and length and NBPGR/TCR 864 for yellow vein mosaic resistance. Among hybrids, NBPGR/TCR 893 x NBPGR/TCR 864 exhibited outstanding sea effect for yield while NBPGR/TCR 865 x NBPGR/TCR 438 and NBPGR/TCR 893 x NBPGR/TCR 861 were notable for single fruit weight, length and girth. The hybrid NBPGR/TCR 854 x NBPGR/TCR 865 showed maximum tolerance to YVM.Item Correlation studies in black gram under partially shaded conditions(Kerala Agricultural University, 1992) Saji T Abraham; Sreekumar, S G; Saraswathy, P; Gopinathan Nair, V; Manikantan Nair, PItem Divergence analysis of morphological and quality traits in sugarcane(Department of Statistics, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, 1989) Santhi, T E; Saraswathy, PMultivariate analytical techniques are found to be very useful in plant breeding research to explain the influence of various factors on the phenomenon under study. Factor analysis is found to be an appropriate tool to identify the factors of genetic divergence. D2 – analysis is helpful to group the divergent genotypes into various clusters when measurements on a number of related characters are available on a large number of genotypes such that the genotypes within a cluster are homogeneous with respect to these characters and heterogeneous between the clusters. The present study is aimed at identifying the factors of divergence in relation to morphological and quality traits in forty eight clones of sugarcane. The fifteen clones T.67172, Co.7717, Co.419, Coc.779, Co.7219, Coc.777, Ic.225, Co.6304, S - 99, Coc.773, Coc.772, Co.62198, Co.62101, Coc.778 and S – 77 are able to group into one cluster. Four more clusters are able to form respectively with five varieties (Co.658, Co.62175, S – 105, Co.6907, Co.995) in the second cluster, nine (F.1 – 2, Co.62174, S – 87, KHS 3296, Coc. 671, Co.7704, Co.785, CoM.7114, CoM.7125) in the third, seven (Co.6807, Co.1340, Co.527, S – 33, Co.6806, B. 37172, Co. 527 – M – 10) in the fourth and four varieties (Co.1307, CoA.7602, Coc.705, Co.453) in the fifth cluster. The remaining clones are not able to group. Among these clusters are utilized for factor analysis. A factor related to quality is extracted as the first factor in all the three clusters. The characters pol at 12th month, C.C.S. percentage, brix at 12th month, purity percentage and sugar yield per plot dominated this factor. Among these characters pol at 12th month, C.C.S. percentage and brix at 12th month are found to be more amenable to changes due to selection. The second factor is identified by the characters cane yield per plot, shoot count germination count and number of millable canes. Apart from these characters weight of cane is also included in this factor in cluster 1. The characters which are more amenable to change due to selection are cane yield per plot and shoot count. The characters are not common in the remaining four factors. The 70 genotypes were found to fall into six clusters with 57 genotypes in cluster I, four in cluster II, three in cluster III, two in cluster IV, three in cluster V arid one in cluster VI. The distribution of the genotypes into six different clusters was not according to their places of origin showing that the genotypes forming one group were geographically diverse, while those obtained from the same region were genetically different. Cluster V showed high mean values for yield and major yield attributes indicating that it is superior to the rest of the clusters. Cluster I and IV were genetically closer while cluster II and VI were wider. West Coast Tall and Natural Cross Dwarf based on growth rate of seedlings at the 9th month of germination. For most of the seedling characters, Komadan generations (Manju, 1992) showed significant superiority over WCT and they behaved as a distinct group with regard to total leaf area over both WCT and NCD. They were also found to be significantly superior to WCT for seedling vigour index and number of seedlings with split leaves. The three Komadan generations were on par regarding recovery ot quality seedlings and were significantly superior to WCT. The field experiment ( 8 x 3 RBD) was conducted at the interspaces of coconut garden under partial shade for identifying a suitable groundnut variety with high yield and shade tolerance. The pooled analysis of the data for three years revealed that the variety TG 3 was consistently superior in dry pod yield. Therefore, it was recommended for inclusion in the package of practices recommendations of the Kerala Agricultural University as a suitable variety for cultivation as intercrop in coconut garden under partially shaded conditions.Item Variability in black gram under partially shaded conditions(Kerala Agricultural University, 1992) Saji T Abraham; Sreekumar, S G; Saraswathy, P; Gopinathan Nair, V; Manikantan Nair, PVariability in nineteen varieties of black gram was studied, under partially shaded conditions in coconut plantations. Analysis of variance for nineteen characters showed significant differences among the varieties for ten characters. Analysis of variance for chlorophyll pigments (a and b) at flowering and pod maturity revealed that there was no significant difference in the chlorophyll content among the varieties, but significant differences existed among the varieties for the chlorophyll pigments estimated at flowering and pod maturity periods. High genotypic coefficient of variation, moderate to high heritability and high genetic advance recorded for leaf area index at 50 per cent flowering and accumulation of dry matter (photosynthetic efficiency) at 50 per cent and 100 per cent flowering, number of days to blooming and number of days to the first pod harvest suggest the reliability of these characters during selection programmes for the improvement of this crop.
