Development and application of a scale to measure the efficiency of adult education centres
(Department Of Agricultural Extension, College Of Agriculture, Vellayani, 1990) Padmanabhan, V B; Thampi, A M
This study on the development and application of a scale to measure the efficiency of Adult Education Centres (AECs) was designed to develop and standardize a scale to measure the efficiency of AECs, to evaluate the selected AECs by using the scale developed and to suggest a model for the efficient functioning of AECs. The study was conducted in the Rural Functional Literacy Programme (RFLP) centres of the Rural Development Blocks of Ollukkara and Kodakara in Thrissur district during 1989. A three stage sampling design was adopted for the study. Instructors and learners of the AECs were the two types of respondents included in the study. Efficiency of AEC (dependent variable) and selected 41 factors (independent variables) were the variables for the study. The data were collected from the instructors by using questionnaires and from the learners by using interview schedules. The collected data were analysed using appropriate statistical techniques including percentage analysis, simple, linear correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, step-wise regression analysis and path coefficient analysis. The salient findings oDepartment of Agricultural Extension College of Agriculturef the study are as follows : 1. Thirty seven independent variables out of the 41 were found to have significant positive relationship with the efficiency of AEC. Job commitment of instructor had the highest value of correlation coefficient. 2. The selected 24 independent variables taken together accounted for 98.35 per cent variation in the efficiency of AEC. The nine variables which were found to exert significant influence on the efficiency of AEC when taken together accounted for 96.27 per cent variation in the efficiency of AEC. 3. The best prediction equation was with eight variables which accounted for 93.97 per cent variation in the efficiency of AEC. These variables were instructor-learner communication, information processing behaviour of instructor, job commitment of instructor, job satisfaction of instructor, human resources, supply of inputs, monitoring and empathy of learner. 4. Job commitment of instructor alone explained 89.03 per cent variation in the efficiency of AEC. 5. Job commitment of instructor had the largest direct effect on the efficiency of AEC and its three components, namely, achievements of learners in literacy, awareness and functionality. The high positive correlations of all the other factors with the efficiency of AEC and its components were due to their positive inter-relationship with job commitment of instructor. 6. The scale developed to measure the efficiency of AECs was found to have high validity (content, criterion – related and concurrent) and reliability (test-rest and split-half). 7. The distribution of scores obtained on evaluating the selected AECs by using the scale was found to be normal. 8. A model was suggested for the efficient functioning of AECs based on the results of this study.

Progressiveness of farmers and their socio-economic characteristics in adopting high yielding variety of paddy
    (Kerala Agricultural University, 1986) Bhaskaran, S; Thampi, A M
Out of the 125 farmers randomly selected for the study, 77 farmers were progressive and 48 farmers were less progressive with the adoption score ranging from 78.60 and above and less than 78.60 respectively, who were considered to be high and low adopters. Regarding their socio-economic characteristics, none was found to be related with their extent of adoption, which may be due to their progressiveness. However, farmers in this area were high risk bearers. They had average perception on the profit in cultivating high yielding variety of paddy.

Study on the role of panchayat members in the planning and execution of agricultural production programmes in the Athiyannor N. E. S. block, Kerala
    (Kerala Agricultural University, 1974) Thampi, A M; Menon, A G G
A study was conducted with the Presidents and members of the wards of the seven panchayats of the Athiyannoor N. E. S. Block on their role in planning and execusion of Block programmes. The study revealed that a majority of the members always identified and assessed village problems of larger interest, found solutions and gave wide publicity to programmes executed in the Block. But a majority of them only occasionally took responsibilities to execute programmes, considered feasibility and evaluatability of targets and reviewed the progress achieved by the programme of the block. On the contrary opinions and ideas of a sizable percentage of the panchayat members were never shared and they never had timely guidance during the programme planning process. They also never followed a constructive decision making process while planning programmes in their area.

To study the effectiveness of farm broadcasts through radio in disseminating agricultural information to the farmers of Trivandrum district
(Department of Agriculture, College of Agriculture, Vellayani, 1980) Mothilal Nehru, S; Thampi, A M
The study was conducted in Trivendrum district of Kerala with the objective of identifying the preference of listeners with reference to mode, programme, duration and frequency of farm broadcasts. It was also decide to study the relationship between selected characteristics of listeners and their mass media exposure behaviour, listening behaviour, communication behaviour, source utilization behaviour and adoption behaviour. The selected charecteristics of the listeners were age, education, occupation, farm size, crops grown, radio ownership and discussion. The available measurement techniques and scoring systems were used for independent variables such as education (Trivedi, 1963), social participation (Trivedi, 1963) and occupation (Badrinarayanan, 1977). Age was measured in terms of number of years the respondent had completed and number of acres cultivated was taken as the measure of farm size. Radio ownership was measured in terms of possession of radio set. The instruments for measuring mass media exposure behaviour was developed on the lines of Rogers and Svenning (1969). The scales of measures listening behaviour (Badrinarayanan, 1977) and communication behaviour (Murthy and Singh, 1974) were used with slight modifications. The Source utilization behaviour was measured by the scale developed by Nair (1969),. The adoption behaviour was measured by the Adoption Quotient as developed by Jaiswal and Dave (1972). Data has been collected from 150 charcha samithy members using a pre-tested, valid interview schedule. Data statistically analysed using appropriate parametric techniques. The results revealed that interview was perceived as the best mode of farm broadcasts and karshika mekhala varhtakal was the most preferred farm programme. Among the selected independent variables discussion was the most contributed variable for mass media exposure behaviour. Communication behaviour was influenced mostly by listening behaviour, discussion, mass media exposure behaviour etc. For source utilization behaviour listening behaviour of farmer was the most contributing variable. It was revealed that adoption behaviour of the listener was found to be determined by their communication behaviour.

To study the impact of institutional credit and its influence in the behaviour of farmers in adopting high yielding varieties of paddy cultivation
(Department Of Agricultural Extension, College Of Agriculture, Vellayani, 1978) Bhaskaran, S; Thampi, A M
This study is designed to study the Impact of Institutional Credit and its influence in the behaviour of farmers in adopting High Yielding Varieties of Paddy Cultivation. In this study, 125 farmers of the Anacode I. P. D. Unit, Trivandrum District, were interviewed so as to assess their extent of total adoption of the package of practices recommended by Kerala Agricultural University. The study also pertains to their credit need and utilization to cultivate the High Yielding Varieties of paddy. The data was tabulated and statistically analysed to reveal their adoption behaviour pertaining to the implementation of High Yielding Variety programme in the unit. 52 per cent of the progressive farmers were found to be high adopters of the package of practices. The average credit need of the farmers was found to be Rs.1, 095.87. Less progressive high adopters were found to require the highest credit need. Almost all the farmers utilized their credit offered by institutions in full. In general no relationship was evidenced between age, extent of holding, education, risk perception, perception of cost of innovation, perception of profitability, social participation, occupation and caste and between extent of adoption and credit utilization. Intensive Paddy Development Unit secured first preference amongst others, viz. Co-operative Bank, Commercial Bank, Land Mortage Bank, Moneylenders, Neighbour and Relatives pertaining to timely lending, lower interest rate and easy lending procedure.
