Mother palm and seedling selection in coconut
(Kerala Agricultural University, 1979) Kannan, K; Narayanan Nambiar, P K
Studies were undertaken at the Coconut Research Station, Pilicode to find out influence of mother palm and seedling selection on the performance of the progenies. Palms yielding more than 80 nuts per annum and palms selected at random (bulk mother palms) are found to produce high yielding progenies. Palms giving an yield of less than 20 nuts are defenitely unsuitable for seednut selection. Seedling selection though necessary need not be as stringent as is advocated at present since the yield difference between vigorous and intermediate seedlings is not significant. However, for ensuring better establishment, early flowering and higher yield, poor seedlings should be rejected.

Sodium chloride nutrition of coconut palms
(Kerala Agricultural University, 1984) Samuel Mathew; Jose, A I; Narayanan Nambiar, P K; Kannan, K
An experiment was conducted at the Coconut Research Station, Pilicode, Kerala to study the effect of substitution of potassium applied to coconut by sodium. Twentyfour year old coconut palms grown in laterite soil and which received N,P and K at the recommended dose were selected for the study. Replacement of potassium applied as KCI at the rate of 1000 g K20/palm/year to the extent of 50% or even 75% by Na.,0 applied as NaCI for 5 years did not reduce the yield of nuts. Application of NaCI at this rate for 5 years to the laterite soils of Pilicode receiving fairly good rainfall did not alter the pH, EC and aggregate stability of the soil.

Effect of potassium chloride and sodium chloride on the performance of coconut in a laterite soil
    (Kerala Agricultural University, 1992) Prema, D; Jose, A I; Narayanan Nambiar, P K
A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of Nad on the performance of young coconut palms grown in a laterite soil at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Pilicode. The treatments were the substitution of K2O (applied as KC1) by Na2O (applied as Nad) to the extent of 100, 75, 50, 25 and 0 per cent. The palms receiving 50 per cent substitution of toO by Na2O retained maximum number of functioning leaves. The treatments differed significantly in their influence on nutrient uptake of the palms in the case of K, Na and Cl. Palms receiving higher amount of K or Na retained higher amount of these elements. Palms receiving neither KG nor Nad registered significantly lower uptake of Cl than palms receiving other treatments. The available K and available Na increased with increased application of K and Na respectively while the other characteristics of the soil were not affected.
