Cytogenetic studies of the F1 hybrid Abelmoschus esculentus X A, tetraphyllus and its amphidiploid
    (Kerala Agricultural University, 1990) Suresh Babu, K V; Dutta, O P
The FI hybrids, (A.esculentus x A. tetraphyllus resembled the wild parent and exhibited hybrid vigour. Its meiosis was abnormal snowing more of univalents and less of bivalents and was completely sterile. The amphidiploid (A. csculentus-tctraphyllus) obtained through colchicine treatment was fully fertile. It showed a low multivalent formation during meiosis and can survive as a new synthetic species. The practical value of the amphidiploid in okra breeding has been indicated.

Histochemical studies on micro and megasporogenesis in the interspecific F1 hybrid of Abelmoschus Esculentus x A. Tetraphyllus
    (Kerala Agricultural University, 1992) Suresh Babu, K V; Dutta, O P
In the interspecific hybrid between Abelmoschus csculentus and A. tetraphyllus the developmental stages of male gamete were abnormal. Pollen mother cells underwent normal meiosis and restitution division. The restitution division gave raise to fertile pollen grains. The developmental stages of female gamete were not complete. The study revealed the degeneration of megaspores of the linear tetrad and thus formation of empty ovules. The megaspore tetrads were low in nucleic acids and protein. The sterility of the interspecific hybrid is attributed to break down of entire megaspores.

    Chromosome polymorphism in okra
    (Kerala Agricultural University, 1994) Suresh Babu, K V; Dutta, O P
Meiotic study was made on nine okra lines (Abelnioschus esciilentuf [L] Moench.) resistant to yellow vein mosaic virus (YVMV), evolved by introgressing the resistant genes from A. tetnphyllus (L.) Medic. The chromosome number of the lines varied from 2n = 120 to 144. All the lines showed regular meiosis. The study confirmed the complex polyploidy in A. esculent us which can sustain a considerable number of additions and deletions of chromosomes.

Genetic variability in Abelmoschus caillei L.
(Kerala Agricultural University, 1999) Reena Susan Chacko; Suresh Babu, K V; Rajan, S; Krishnan, S
Studios on parameters of variability, correlation and path coefficient analysis of fruit yield in Abelmoschus caillei L- revealed that characters such as number of branches per plant, number of nodes per plant, plant height and fruit length had maximum coefficient of variation. Higher values of heritahility anil genetic advance were simultaneously estimated for fruit yield per plant and fruits per plant. Yield per plant had hiph positive significant correlation with fruits per plant, fruit length, fruit weight, plant height and number of intemodes on main stem. Path analysis revealed positive direct effect on fruit yield per plant through fruits per plant followed by plant height,
